PROCEDURE

Investigator Responsibilities

The Investigator:

  • Makes available copies of SUP426 the UAB IRB Participant Brochure, “Participating in Research Studies,” and/or the OHRP Brochure, “Becoming a Research Volunteer: It’s Your Decision” in participant waiting areas.

OIRB Responsibilities

The Clerical Staff:

  • Distributes educational materials.

The Administrative Staff:

  • Prepares participant education materials;
  • Designs evaluation tools for evaluating activities;
  • Participates in CQIP process;
  • Maintains participant information/education materials on the UAB IRB web site;
  • Updates participant education materials displayed on the UAB IRB web site;
  • Provides web site links on the IRB web site to other important information and educational web sites (see GUI301 IRB web resources for participants).

The Senior Staff:

  • Develops and prepares information for participant education;
  • Provides outreach education to community groups;
  • Designs evaluation tools and reviews outreach activities through the CQIP process and makes changes as appropriate;

  • Provides current materials for inclusion on the UAB IRB web site for participant education;
  • May inform IRB members of education opportunities.
  • Prepares a written report, at least annually (SUP431), for the VP for Research and Development or his designee and the Chairman of the IRB to evaluate the outreach activities of the IRB;
  • Discusses opportunities to continue or improve outreach activities with the VP for Research and Development or his designee and the Chairman of the IRB based on the prepared written reports.

IRB Responsibilities

The IRB Member:

  • May volunteer for speaking engagements for community groups;
  • Provides information to OIRB staff of opportunities for education/outreach;
  • Reviews and comments on educational information for participants prepared by OIRB staff;
  • Participates in CQIP activities.
